The challenge of deity is just in the early game I feel like, if you manage to get 5-6 cities around turn 100 and specialise your empire toward the victory you're going for, it shouldn't be a problem. My usual science victory with science focused civs is around turn 240-50 in standard speed in deity difficulty. I did, fairly early in the Civ 6 era, try the airforce route, and found it too slow. Until now, I've been in the camp of Standard Speed is the Only Speed. For some reason the AI doesn't use a lot of votes for world religion and 2-3 votes are often enough to win that resolution. Sure the ai have their bonuses, but you have exponentially more time to make up for the deficiencies. On one hand, I really like the policy guards and I hate the dedication system in the original game. The Eagle Warrior builder generation gets ridiculously strong when you're playing on Marathon. I usually play marathon -- it makes the game harder because unit movement is way faster than unit production -- which means you have to be prepared: no time to build an army after a war is declared. War carts are stronger, faster, and cost less than Jaguar Warriors. In Civ 6? No. Gilgamesh is the best marathon civ (warcarts are the strongest unit for hundreds of turns and quick to build), while other civs that have their special units later in their era's become less powerful, even if you start in their dominant era (if special units are essential for the civ). Just survive first 2-3 ages, do a lot of army, try to target the best possible units. Hope this helps! The games I do better in terms of settling early are those in which I'm playing with a faith based civ, such as Khmer, Russia, Ethiopia or Rome (with Voidsingers). and requires specialized cities concentrating on different districts that work with your civ bonuses. 15 cities is way too much, specially on Deity, I often find myself at 8 or 9 (depending on the civ) and I finnish settling at turn 120 at around 12 or 13 cities. There's no comparison, it's not a gentle scale in difficulty, it's a straight up fuck you in the mouth type difference. Well I have exactly 1 domination victory in the entirety of civ 6 which is Basil on Deity at Turn 180 Standard (which is faster than any of my culture victories) but Basil is broken af and on most civs you probably need 220+ turns to win. Having an actual window of use for units is great. In Civ 5 I pretty much beelined great library every single game, I used to do the same with civ 6. Cuz by turn 120-150, if you got warred by other civ and/or, rolled a poor poor start, you would be with 4-5 cites and you don't have the options to scale into culture wins. I was researching new tech every few turns and could barely produce and get much use out of different units before they were obsolete and had to be upgraded. If you don’t have your research order, financing, and build order perfect, absolutely perfect, for the first 60 or so turns you are dead, game over within 5 turns of the classical age. Prince AI hasn't got enough production to withstand zombie onslaught, so most of the time most Prince AI are reduced just to the 0 hp capital, surrounded by a carpet of zombies. I almost always play marathon and I really enjoy it. It does take me a while to get through a game though. In other words, around the time I build Taj Mahal. My beliefs gave me more science per x followers and I picked the temple that gives food (huge cities). Once I stopped trying to build every wonder early I started winning so much more often. Personally I play marathon only on occasion since there are lots of mods that work well with a marathon pace. It's even worse on marathon speed at the beginning of the game. The AI in Civ is very poor, devs are not paying attention to do it better obviously so you will win easy peasy in later game. Use the Mongols keshniks, the AI absolutely can't deal with them. In order to gain any chance of winning on deity you have to go hard on conquest to secure a large empire and gain a competitive advantage over the insane bonuses the ai gets.
